We prefer to perform the spay/neuter surgery at 6 months of age. The first heat cycle in a female occurs around six months of age. Spaying before the first heat cycle greatly reduces the risk of breast tumors and cancer. Neutering your pet prevents many undesirable behavior patterns. It is always easier to prevent these behavior patterns than to correct them. It is also a good age to check for retained baby teeth and to evaluate the hips in large breed dogs.
Spaying and neutering your pet will not make your pet become overweight and lazy. Heredity, diet and exercise will determine your pet’s weight and attitude rather than the surgery.
There is always a risk when a pet is placed under general anesthesia. If your pet is healthy, the risk is minimal. If you have any concerns, we would recommend a pre-procedure exam including any necessary testing for your pet.
